Beury, Lu

In Lu Beury’s innovative paintings an emotional use of dramatic colors, abstract shapes, rich textures and exaggerated impressions are used to create large expressive works.    The resulting canvases show an interesting balance of positive and negative space, are dynamic, interesting and totally original.

Beury applies gesso, acrylic paints, sand, metallic papers, string and other found objects to her mixed-media surfaces.   Thick paints, more paints, glazes, incisings, smudges and the like are added.   Metallic touches are intertwined through the composition and random shapes.  “It is like the painting and I are one.   I am totally absorbed with my “creation”.  Is the composition balanced?  Is it dynamic? What feelings do I get?  When the answers to these questions are positive, I apply the final touches.   I feel the painting is successful when it has evoked a joyous response from me.”

Before moving to California, Beury earned a bachelor’s degree in art from the Pennsylvania State University.  Since then her studies include courses at the California Art Institute,  California College of Art,  University of California at Berkeley, as well as, studying with many local artists, including the late Lundy Siegrist, who greatly influenced her.  She has travelled extensively and has painted in France, Italy and the Bay Area.

Beury’s early career includes many years of teaching art in various cities throughout the United States.  Her art works have won many awards in juried shows, been on exhibit in Bay Area, Palm Desert and Santa Fe galleries and are part of many private and commercial collections.
